Dustin R. Kern has 18 years of experience providing construction materials services (CMS) to SME’s clients. These services include caisson observation, masonry observation, verification of micropile installation, foundation subgrade observation, field density testing, compaction testing of fill/backfill, and concrete and bituminous concrete testing. As Operations Manager for SME’s Bay City office, Dustin provides coordination of field personnel and the resources to complete projects efficiently and on time. He also serves as Team Leader for SME’s Co-op and Intern Program in Bay City. In addition, Dustin serves as Traveling Mix Inspector (TMI) and performs Quality Assurance testing in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Bay Region Central Lab provided by SME.

Dustin is an MDOT Certified SuperPave HMA Mix Design professional. He assists MDOT Construction Engineers with setup and control of HMA mixtures on many projects throughout the Bay and North Regions. He has taken Civil Engineering courses with Michigan State University and is a MDOT Certified Density Technician, MDOT Certified Aggregate Technician Level II, and a Certified Concrete Strength Technician from the American Concrete Institute (ACI). He is also a Qualified Concrete Technician Level II (ACI/MCA), a Michigan Qualified Bituminous QA/QC Technician and a Certified Nuclear Density Meter Operator (Troxler).

Regardless of his role, Dustin takes ownership of every project he is involved in knowing he has the opportunity to impact each project in a positive manner from start to finish. Some of his representative projects include the multi-faceted Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation Solar I- Phase I, II, III and IV expansion projects in Hemlock, Michigan; the pavement reconstruction project for Consumers Energy Karn-Weadock Generation Complex in Essexville, Michigan; and the Dow Kokam expansion in Midland, Michigan. Dustin has been involved in multiple projects for MDOT providing quality assurance testing for hot mix asphalt and concrete. He has also performed bituminous concrete plant inspections for several MDOT projects.

Dustin was part of a team that received the 2014 Roads & Bridges Asphalt Recycling and Reclamation Association (ARRA) award for the Full Depth Reclamation work on the Consumers Energy Karn Weadock generating complex. Not every project wins an award, but Dustin is dedicated to bringing this same quality service and attention to all of SME’s clients by ensuring they have the right people working on their projects.

Dustin enjoys spending his leisure time traveling with family and coaching youth softball. He also enjoys getting his hands dirty in the garden or kicking back watching Tigers baseball or college football and basketball. He also volunteers his time as a member of the board of trustees for St. Michael’s Lutheran Church and School in Richville, Michigan.
