Each year, about 40 enterprising students join the ranks of SME’s Co-op program to further their careers in civil engineering, environmental engineering, and construction management.
First, we set you up for success in the field by starting you in our multi-week training program.
Next, you’ll first receive direct guidance and instruction from our regional training leadership to prepare you for on-site work. Each Co-op pairs up with an SME team member to head to a work site, where we’ll demonstrate the work to be done.
Lastly, as you gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills necessary to continue the testing and observations on your own, our team members step back and let you shine.
SME offers two Co-op sessions: February through August, or mid-May through December. It’s a commitment that allows you to partner with SME for a significant investment in your future. This paid opportunity is a great way for us to form a relationship and give you the hands-on project experience to understand your career choices and develop your passion.
No matter where you are in your college journey, if you’re looking to take your learning to the next level, we want to hear from you!

It also gives you the opportunity to build relationships that will last your entire career.
Additionally, full-term Co-ops get preferential consideration for subsequent internships and full-time opportunities upon graduation. Many former SME Co-ops are recognized leaders within our organization today! So, it’s a great way to get your foot in the door with a group of passionate people building and revitalizing our world.
