Location: Plymouth, Michigan

SME is seeking a Welding or NDT Specialist to join our Steel|Coatings|NDT Services Group in our Plymouth, Michigan office. Projects typically consist of new and existing buildings, but may include bridges, framing for industrial equipment, above ground storage tanks and piping.
Responsibilities may include:
• Reviewing bolted and welded structural connections for buildings, fabrication shop inspections, and additional specialty reviews.
• Performing nondestructive testing of welded or machined metals.
• Reviewing and developing welding procedures and welder qualifications.
• Steel testing as needed in our Materials Laboratory, including: anchor rods, load testing of assemblies and components.
• Occasionally assisting with coatings, concrete, or other testing as needed to support other service groups within SME.

Requirements for this position include:
• A current American Welding Society (AWS) CWI certification, American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) certification, or significant welding experience.
• Preference will be given to candidates with ASNT Level 2 certifications for magnetic particle (MT) ultrasonic testing (UT), and dye penetrant (PT).
• Experience and/or certification in tanks, piping, and coatings inspection are a plus.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to customer service.
• Capable of working from ladders, swing stages, aerial lifts, and at heights; walking steel following 100 percent tie off requirements; using appropriate fall protection equipment; operating aerial lifts; and a willingness to work alone or as a team.
• A good safety and driving record, and able to successfully pass security background checks and drug screenings as required by our clients.

Position requires routine travel to sites throughout Michigan, and occasional travel to sites outside Michigan. Overtime and weekend work will be required as necessary, to meet our clients’ needs. Candidates must live in the Metro Detroit/Toledo area, or be willing to relocate.
