Location: Plymouth, Shelby Twp., or Detroit, Michigan

SME is seeking a regular, full-time, experienced Construction Engineering Senior Inspector to join our new Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) group. This position may be based in our Plymouth, Shelby Township or Detroit, Michigan offices.

Responsibilities for this position will include:
• Monitoring the contractor’s work for compliance with all project documents;
• Interfacing on a daily basis with project Team Members, clients and contractors;
• The ability to coach and teach Inspectors for MDOT and Local Agency projects.

Requirements for this position include:
• MDOT Certifications or Training Required In: MDOT HMA (Bituminous) Paving or MI HMA Bituminous Paving Operations, MI Certified Aggregate Inspection, MDOT Density Certification, Underground Pipe Installation and Inspection, Concrete Paving, MCA or MCPA Level 1, Certified Storm Water Operator, Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) Plan Review and Design Certification, Field Manager Training, Prevailing Wage Training and Materials Acceptance Process Seminar.
• The candidate can lack no more than 3 of the certifications shown above at the time of hire. Any lacking certifications, at the time of hire, must be obtained as a condition of employment within one year from the date of hire. Training needed to obtain the lacking certifications will be provided by SME.
• Demonstrates knowledge and experience using Field Book.
• A minimum of two projects of experience on road construction projects where candidate performed the role as Lead Field Construction Technician (Senior Inspector) in overall charge of all inspection services for the road construction project.
• In addition to the above, candidate must have a minimum of three additional MDOT completed projects on road construction projects where you contributed a significant role (i.e. inspector using Field Book).
• If the candidate is unable to demonstrate a minimum of 3 additional MDOT completed road construction projects working in a significant role (i.e. inspector using field book), the candidate must demonstrate 8 projects of experience (Local Agency or combination of Local agency & MDOT) on road construction projects where they contributed a significant role (i.e. inspector using field book).
• A minimum of five years of experience on road construction projects.
• Demonstrated knowledge of FHWA and MDOT standards, practices and procedures.
• Ability to read plans and specifications and demonstrate computer skills.
• Excellent communication, report writing and customer relations skills.
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Demonstrated leadership and teaching skills.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt to new challenges and learn new concepts.
• A willingness to work hard in an efficient and organized manner.
• Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and terrain conditions.
• Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs., stand for long periods, work from heights and in tight spaces.
• Willingness to travel to cover out of town overnight projects.
• Ability to work overtime, including weekends, on an as-needed basis.
• A valid driver license, experience driving in the U.S., and a satisfactory driving record (free of major infractions, repeated offenses, excessive speed, driving or operating under the influence, etc.)
